2010 Basketball Signee: Matt Hasse

The last two seasons the Austin Peay State University Governors have been out rebounded both in and out of conference. This past season, the Govs ranked 7th out of 10 Ohio Valley Conference teams in offensive rebounds per game and 6th in defensive rebounding percentage. So it makes sense that Head Coach Dave Loos and his staff focused on adding size with the 2010 Signing Class. Enter Matt Hasse.

Jonathan Smith is a two-sport (baseball and football) athlete from Jonesboro High School in Jonesboro, Georgia.  Smith has excellent hands and has a great combination of power and speed. His 40-yard dash time is 4.5 seconds. Although signed as a wide receiver, Smith has played running back, cornerback, safety, and outside linebacker in high school.

2011 Early Baseball Signees: Rolando Gautier

Rolando Gautier is a left handed pitcher/outfielder from Pennsauken, New Jersey. Gautier has four pitches: 4-seam fastball, 2-seam fastball, change-up, and curveball. Rolando has nice velocity on both his fastballs, reaching 90 miles per hour with his four-seam and mid-80’s with his two-seam. His two-seam fastball has excellent movement. When his fastball is working, Gautier’s change-up is one of his most effective pitches due in part to his excellent mechanics. His weakest pitch is his curveball, which he will have to improve if he wants to throw it at the college level.

A.J. Walkenhorst is a right handed pitcher from St. Peters, Missouri. Walkenhorst’s fastball tops out in the high 80’s, but should approach 90 miles per hour by the end of spring workouts.. His best off speed pitch is a cutter that is especially tough on right handed batters. He has great command of all his pitches.

2011 Early Baseball Signees: Matt “Mr. Clutch” Wollenzin

Matt “Mr. Clutch” Wollenzin (see video below) is one of two catchers signed by Austin Peay State University during the early signing period. Wollenzin, while throwing right-handed, bats left-handed. He hit over .559 last season on his way to being an Honorable Mention to the Denver Post Class 5A team. He was named the Jefferson County League MVP and was named as a league first team performer. He was also earned the Big Stick award at the 2009 Westminster Baseball Fever Classic.

Zach Toney is a left handed pitcher from D’Iberville, Mississippi by way of Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Mississippi. He has four pitches: fastball, curveball, straight change up, and a split finger fastball. Toney has good velocity on his fastball for a lefty, topping out at about 90 miles per hour. Read more »
